How to Access Android Bootloader or System Recovery Mode

May 26th, 2010

Bootloader exists in Android-based mobile phone to start the sequence of loading operating system into RAM. Different versions of Android OS and different models of cell phone may have different version of bootloader.

On some cases, Android phone users may want to go into bootloader mode, either to view the bootloader version or flash new SBF.

There are a few methods of going into bootloader mode on Android phone devices, depending on whether the phone has QWERTY keyboard built-in, and here’s step-by-step guide to launch bootloader mode:

Microsoft has mentioned that the SP1 only bring minor updates to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, where new features will be limited to 2 new virtualization-related technologies: RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory, with an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side. RemoteFX intends to make user experience across remote virtual desktops a better one with support for Windows Aero, full-motion video streaming, Silverlight animations, highly-synchronized audio, 3D graphics and applications. Dynamic Memory feature allows Hyper-V hypervisor to make use of physical memory not only efficiently but also dynamically while delivering as minimal an impact on performance as possible.

However, words is that Windows 7 SP1 will also bring significant performance boost for BitLocker Drive Encryption, and deliver fix for storage-related performance bugs. Main point is that, while most bug fixes have been delivered via Windows Update, some updates may only appear in SP1.

In a company blog posting, Takeshi Numoto – Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Office, confirmed that Microsoft had hit the RTM milestone. “RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone,” Numoto said. Microsoft also said that 7.5 million people download the beta version of Office 2010, 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads.

Microsoft is currently running an Office 2010 Technology Guarantee. Neowin revealed Microsoft’s plans for the guarantee program. Customers who purchase Office 2007, or a new PC with Office 2007, and activate it between March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010 will be offered a free upgrade to Office 2010. IE9 Preview

March 25th, 2010

n this day of the conference, Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager for Internet Explorer announced the successor to IE 8, Internet Explorer 9. President of Windows Division Steven Sinofsky also made a guest appearance on stage for the IE 9 demo.

IE, despite all its flaws, has still been the most widely used browser on Windows. With IE 9. the IE team has done a lot of work to take it to a whole new level with all the graphics rendering taking place on the GPU level for HTML5 via the Microsoft DirectX technology
. IE 9 has been re-written from the ground up and it takes advantage of the GPU power for all page rendering, and further enables web developers to exploit this power in ways they already understand (CSS, DHTML, JavaScript).

Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview is now available for download. This Platform Preview is released to basically give developers a sense of how the performance, compatibility and standards support is going to look like, come the final thing. This is not a full fledged (UI bits are not included) browser, and hence is not recommended to be used for regular web browsing.

Hack to Activate Office 2010 RC (RTM Escrow) With Free Product Key

March 5th, 2010

Microsoft does not invite many people to join the official MS Office 2010 RC (Release Candidate) beta testing program in Connect website. For people who downloads and installs Office Professional 2010 RC (RTM Escrow) build 14.0.4734.1000 for volume licensing distribution channel, it’s possible to install the Office 2010 without any product key. For user who wants to activate the installed Office 2010, which may become the final RTM version (the RTM version is now rumored to be build 14.0.4740.1000), here’s the trick or hack on how to activate Office 2010 RC.

The workaround to crack Office 2010 activation as detailed below works by replacing the unactivated tokens.dat and pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms, with activated version, which provided for free by Microsoft for Office 2010 Beta program. The free product key for Office 2010 Beta is a MAK type (Multiple Activation Key), which is now required to activate volume licensing version of Office 2010 products.

One benefit of using MAK to activate a Microsoft product is that, the system does not required to update or refresh its activation status, internally or externally against any activation servers. The convenience is provided from computers, such as laptops or notebooks, which does not connected to the corporate network persistently or consistently. Reactivation is only required when there is a hardware change. Best of all, if for any reason the software product which has received a MAK product key loses activation or fails validation, its functionality is not limited or restricted. Only nagging notifications will appear, which will disappear when the product is activated again.

Furthermore, the time bomb, which renders the pre-release Office 2010 useless after an expiry date does not exist in the leaked volume or Select versions of Office 2010. So, the activated Office 2010 RC (RTM Escrow) will likely to stay activated forever, even if it’s been activated with license files from the beta.

1. If there is any existing Office 2010 been installed, uninstall it, then reboot the system.
2. Download and install official Microsoft Office 2010 Beta (the version of Office 2010 suites to install is Office Professional 2010 Beta build 14.0.4536.1000, and must be the same system architecture of x86 or x64 that intends to be installed at RC, i.e. 32-bit Office 2010 Beta activation files will activate 32-bit Office 2010 RC/RTM while 64-bit Office 2010 Beta activation files will activate 64-bit Office 2010 RC/RTM).

While at the Office 2010 Beta page, register and request for a free product key (which is a MAK – Multiple Activation Key) for Office 2010 to activate the installed Office Professional 2010 Beta over Internet against Microsoft’s activation key.
3. Once Office Professional 2010 Beta has been installed and activated, copy the pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms file from the following folder to another folder location for safekeeping:

%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\Office Setup Controller\

Tip: User who installs 32-bit Office 2010 in 64-bit OS should find the file at %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\Office Setup Controller\ folder.

4. Also copy and save the tokens.dat file in the following folder to another but same folder location as above for safekeeping (for Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server):

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform\
In Windows XP, it’s located here:
%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform\

5. After copying above two files, uninstall the installed Office 2010 Beta product.
6. Download and install Office 2010 RC (RTM Escrow) for corporate volume licensing distribution channel.
7. Download ActivateOffice2010beta.7z script by SoLoR from MDL forum.
8. Extract the activate.cmd script from the archive and place the file inside the same folder with the two saved tokens.dat and pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms files in steps above.
9. Edit the activate.cmd file with any text editor, and the modify the following line to include the Office 2010 MAK product key used to activate the beta version:
cscript “%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office14\ospp.vbs” /inpkey:GVFBT-K6Q6T-HTX3P-C4K7G-7V2FR
Replace the GVFBT-K6Q6T-HTX3P-C4K7G-7V2FR in the line above to own personalized Office 2010 MAK product key.

10. Run a console command prompt as administrator.
11. Change directory to the folder with three files mentioned above – activate.cmd, tokens.dat and pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms.
12. Execute the activate.cmd.
The script will automate the process to take ownership and grant full access permissions on tokens.dat and pkeyconfig-office.xrm-ms, and then replace the files with activated copy. It then calls the ospp.vbs via cscript engine to re-input the product key for Office 2010 and activate the full version product:

cscript “%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office14\ospp.vbs” /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript “%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office14\ospp.vbs” /act

13. The Office 2010 should be activated. To check activation status of Office 2010, run the following command:
cscript “%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office14\ospp.vbs” / dstatus

Tip: For user who has problem activating Office 2010 RC or RTM Escrow after following steps above, try to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform registry key after uninstalling Office 2010 Beta.

Tip: The data inside tokens.dat file is generated based on the hardware configuration, so it will be different on each PC. If you intend to activate Office 2010 with crack method above, backup the tokens.dat from each PCs you intend to do so.

The MS Office 2010 activation crack is likely able to crack and activate Office 2010 RTM build. As the method has been revealed, it’s likely that Microsoft will fix the loophole before releasing the final RTM version of Office 2010. Thus, the RTM build version of Office 2010 is unlikely to stay at 14.0.4734.1000, especially when the target RTM data to be around April.

Office 2010 Escrow Build 14.0.4734.1000

March 4th, 2010

Microsoft is gearing up to wrap up the final development milestone of Office 2010. The next iteration of the Office System is currently in RTM Escrow stage according to Russian website Wzor.

According to information leaked in the wild, the development process of Office 2010 has reached the last stage before release to manufacturing (RTM). The latest Office 2010 interim version compiled in Redmond is Build 14.0.4734.1000, which means that it supersedes the Build 14.0.4730.1007 which was leaked in the wild and made available for download from various third-party sources, including torrent trackers and warez websites at the start of January.

Build 14.0.4730.1007 was labeled RTM in the End User License Agreement (EULA), but apparently the release was only pre-RTM Escrow. In this regard, Office 2010 14.0.4734.1000 is the RTM Escrow Build of the productivity suite. Escrow generally designates a stage in the development process of Microsoft software in which all changes are frozen, with testers looking for any regression issues. Provided that no problems be identified with Office 2010 Build 14.0.4734.1000, the product will move into RTM.

According to Wzor, some testers have already received the 14.0.4734.1000 bits, inside the company for dogfooding, with plans in motion to also offer the release outside of Redmond, for close partners to test-drive. Wzor promises that it will leak the screenshots for Office 2010 RTM Escrow Build 14.0.4734.1000 soon. Undoubtedly, leaks of the actual bits will follow as well.

Earlier this week, I approached Microsoft and asked about the RTM and General Availability dates for Office 2010. The Redmond company confirmed that the successor of Office 2010 would be available for purchase in June 2010, but said nothing related to the RTM deadline. Third-party sources have already indicated that Office 2010 will be RTM’d sometime in April 2010, a piece of information which remains unconfirmed by Microsoft.

Windows 7 RTM krack killer

March 4th, 2010

Microsoft has yet to kick off the automatic distribution of the Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, an update designed to detect more than 70 known activation exploits for Windows Vista’s successor considered dangerous, but the refresh is already available for download.

KB971033 is already live on Microsoft Support, namely the article for the Update for Windows Activation Technologies. The resource also contains two download links, one for Windows 7 for x86-based systems, and one for Windows 7 for x64-based systems.

“Windows Activation Technologies helps you confirm that the copy of Windows 7 that is running on your computer is genuine. Additionally, Windows Activation Technologies helps protect against the risks of counterfeit software. Windows Activation Technologies in Windows 7 consists of activation and validation components that contain anti-piracy features,” an excerpt of the update’s description reads.

Obviously, there is consistent criticism against Microsoft for offering the Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7. The update is capable of detecting copies of the OS that have been illegally activated with more than 70 bypass techniques, throwing the platform into non-genuine state, and notifying the end users that a genuine license must be purchased. The refresh was scheduled to go live on the Microsoft Genuine website yesterday, and on the Microsoft Download Center today, February 17th.

“This update for Windows Activation Technologies helps detect validation errors and activation exploits. This update also detects any tampering attempts made to important Windows 7 system files. Be aware that some counterfeit copies of Windows include malware,” Microsoft reveals. “When this update is installed, it performs a validation process for the copy of Windows that is running on your computer. However, this validation process does not affect the functionality of Windows. The update process exits silently if it detects no validation errors, activation exploits, or tampered files.”

Users with pirated versions of Windows 7 that apply the update will find that the OS begins to offer the non-genuine experience, namely the background goes black, a watermark of the platform’s state is displayed on the desktop and period notifications are triggered informing the customers of the state of the machine. Microsoft underlined that the update was voluntary, users having the choice of not installing it. However, if they do deploy the refresh, it will persistently check their machines against cracks, and will phone home to Microsoft to get additional updates for exploit signatures every 90 days.

“Validation errors and activation exploits try to bypass the Windows activation process and are sometimes included with counterfeit copies of Windows. If a validation error or activation exploit is detected, you will be directed to more information on the Internet for resolution of the activation exploit or the validation error. When validation errors or activation exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate the copy of Windows 7 that is running on your computer,” Microsoft adds.

Customers that believe they might have been tricked into buying a pirated copy of Windows, activated illegally via a crack, can download and run the update in order to see whether they are the victims of software counterfeiters. Users that don’t want the Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7 are free not to download the refresh, and also hide the item when it is delivered via Windows Update later this month.

Windows up, Mac OS X down, Linux down

March 4th, 2010

For the first time in the last six months, Windows’ market share got a small bump, and an unusual break from an otherwise constant and downward trajectory. According to statistics made available by net Applications, the overall usage share of Windows jumped from 92.00% in January 2010 to 92.12% in February. Although the increase in market share is of just 0.12%, it does come as a natural consequence to Windows 7 having been deemed the fastest selling operating system in history. Also between January and February 2010, Apple saw the usage share of Mac OS X trip, and go down from 5.16% to 5.02%. The Cupertino-based hardware company has seen a steady increase of Mac OS X’s market share over the past years, much to the detriment of Windows. Of course, there have been various exceptions to the rule, such as October 2009. The month that brought with it the General Availability of Windows 7 was equivalent to an OS X drop from 5.27% to 5.12%. Since then, OS X never managed to get up to the 5.27% high, while, much to the contrary, it is now on the verge of going back under the 5% mark. Linux too lost a bit of usage share, from 1.02% to 0.98%. But, of course, Linux has been stagnating around the 1%-market-share milestone for years now, and it appears that the open source operating system has hit a dead end. Meanwhile, Windows 7 is less than a month away from breaking the 10%-market-share mark. The OS climbed from 7.57% in January to 8.92% in the past month. But, of course, any growth for Windows 7 translates into lost share for Vista (down from 17.47% to 16.51% in the past two months) and for Windows XP, now at just 65.49% of the market.
